About Taconic State Park

Taconic State Park

Taconic State Park spans over several thousand acres along the Taconic Mountain range, primarily located in Columbia County, New York, with portions extending into western Massachusetts. The park is distinguished by its rugged hills, serene reservoirs, and mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and birch. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes and later developed for recreational use in the mid-20th century. Its location on the Taconic ridgeline provides excellent vistas and supports a diverse ecosystem with mammals like white-tailed deer, black bear, and various bird species including hawks and warblers. Key landmarks include Bash Bish Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Massachusetts, located near the New York–Massachusetts border, drawing many visitors. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking more than 20 miles of well-marked trails that range from gentle lake loops to challenging ridge hikes. The park also features two large reservoirs, offering fishing and non-motorized boating opportunities. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular activities. Taconic State Park appeals to visitors seeking a less crowded alternative to larger state parks, with opportunities for camping in both developed and primitive sites. The park's natural and cultural features make it an appealing destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and families. Its proximity to the Appalachian Trail further connects it to regional hiking networks.
